World Beneath
Dinotopia | Backbone Mountains | Blackwood Flats | Forbidden Mountains | Great Desert | Northern Plains | Outer Island | Rainy Basin | Western Coast | Waterfall City
A massive network of underground caverns, the World Beneath runs under much of Dinotopia, although the extent of the caverns is unknown. Entrances to the World Beneath can be found through the Portal near Canyon City, Sauropolis, and in the Rainy Basin.
Historically, the World Beneath is where the dinosaurs sought refuge from the cataclysm that killed the dinosaurs in the rest of the world. Later, the survivors of Poseidos fled to the World Beneath, living there in technologically advanced colonies until they died out or fled to the surface. Dinotopians are often uneasy about answering questions about the World Beneath; the caverns are a place of great mystery and the subject of many ghost stories.
The World Beneath is also where legendary sunstones may be found, and was explored in the mid-1800s by Arthur Denison’s expedition. In later years other explorers followed Denison’s footsteps and were able to recover more of the sunstones.
During the earthquake many Dinotopians fled to the World Beneath’s entrances in the hope that it might save them from the cataclysm as it once had in the past. The Portal had already collapsed, while the entrance by Sauropolis was too far underwater to be accessed. Others fled into the Rainy Basin, braving the carnivores in favour of safety from Armageddon.
After the earthquake, no one has tried to access the World Beneath. The Portal is still caved-in. Some people claim they know of a few who made it to the entrances within the Rainy Basin, but as yet no one has been able to verify the truth of this claim and no one has returned. The entrance by Sauropolis is now closer to the surface, among the rocky shoreline, but no one has yet attempted to find it.
