forbidden mountains

Forbidden Mountains

The highest mountain range in Dinotopia, the Forbidden Mountains run north-south through the centre of the main island, separating the Great Desert and the Rainy Basin. Since the earthquake, it has been prone to avalanches and rockslides.

Thermala

A summit village that relies upon helium-filled sky galleys for its supplies, Thermala is a centre of weaving and storytelling. It has seen some damage, mostly due to a near-miss from an avalanche.

Avalanches have cut it off from overland methods of travel, but it is still reachable by sky galley.

Sky City

A small alpine town in the Forbidden Mountains. Like Thermala, Sky City has been cut off by rockslides, and has accrued a moderate amount of damage.

Tentpole of the Sky

A monastery of Tibetan design built high in the Forbidden Mountains, the Tentpole of the Sky was built with the aim to offer seclusion to newcomers who might need an isolated place. It is deliberately far from all the reminders of how Dinotopian life differs from the one the dolphinbacks lost, where they can reflect and learn to accept their new life.

Like Thermala, all supplies to the Tentpole of the Sky are brought in by sky galleys. The Tentpole of the Sky also contains an extensive map room, which contains charts not only from all over Dinotopia, but also of the World Beneath.

No one has been able to contact the Tentpole of the Sky since before the earthquake. With a shortage of supplies, sky galleys able to investigate have been few, and those who have tried have been put off by the heavy cloud-cover at the Tentpole’s point. What has become of the monastery is unknown.
